Week 7 & 8

Dealing with legal issues can be a pain in the ass especially when you, as a Computer Science student in particular, are not an expert in the said field. Political Science was never even an option when I chose my desired course for college. One reason for that is due to the fact that it could be as dangerous as hell to a certain point that your life might be at risk. Hearing about deaths of mayors, judges, councilors etc. in the news is no longer a strange thing to me and finding out that these cases had drugs involved doesn't sound surprising after all. Moving on, let's share our thoughts about legal issues concerning cybercrimes, particularly, hacking back, whether we may like it or not. Hacking, although unethical, can be used as a resort for ethical purposes. It is like doing the wrong thing for the right kind of reason. As the term says it all, hacking back is a counter measure towards responding to an aggressive first strike. Although defensive, it is naturally offensive since this method is used when preventive and detection controls have failed to mitigate the threat. Some examples where hacking back can be useful are: tracing the hacker back to its system, breaking in to delete stolen data, retrieving data which can serve as an evidence against the suspect, and embedding malware to restrict the hacker further from doing illegal activities.
